OK, there's these two new bills congress is trying to pass. Two bad bills. Called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) which have called for Google (No. 1 website in the world) to put a black bar over it's name for the day and Wikipedia (No. 6 website in the world) to blackout for the day. And for good reason!
1) SOPA and PIPA would censor the web - For starters, all the movies, songs, tv shows, etc. you watch on YouTube will be GONE. Many websites will be GONE from search engines. It's because they're taking tactics from Communist China.
2) SOPA and PIPA would kill jobs - Small companies will have to track every single little thing they say and link to or forced to be shut down. This is going to severely hurt an already damaged economy, which will eventually spread to the world.
3) SOPA and PIPA wouldn't even work - The rogue websites would change their links and that would be that. While real hard-working companies pay a heavy price. Yeah. If someonething will censor the web and kill jobs in the name of stopping piracy, it should at least work!

Probably.
If this is accepted, many websites you go to (Wikipedia and YouTube as examples) will be permanently deleted. Small companies can die quickly.

This is basically an accurate representation of SOPA

Not really. It censors the internet (they control what is said and what is not) but doesn't destroy it.
Since you're in Australia, you won't be effected as much if it gets passed, but Australia's government might think about the same thing...

Actually, it blacks out the entirety of the internet.
Think of SOPA as the internet after the end of the world.

I don't think you understand.
SOPA would allow anti-piracy laws to go to the extreme, shutting down a website for linking to a site that linked to a site that violate the new, extreme laws. It would NOT destroy the internet truly. Devestate it, yes. Destroy it, no.

On the topic of internet-threatening bills, anyone heard about ACTA?

By ACTA, you mean Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, right?
